American War Mothers here in Southern Nevada receive calls from Patriots all across the valley that want to donate furniture and household items to our Veterans in need. We work closely with case managers from the VA HUD/VASH program. They identify who is moving into an apartment and what their immediate needs are. Since the (DAV) Disabled American Veterans as well as the Vietnam Veterans Association no longer pick up large items, they refer all calls to us.
We were so saddened to hear that once their housing is secured they have nothing to put in their new home. We could not bear to let a Veteran sleep on the floor or be without necessities such as household items, such as dishes, pots and pans , linens etc...
Having a Van full time would enable us to be available when the call comes in to donate furniture, to be able to pick up in a timely manner. We would be able to furnish homes quicker and have a team of volunteers available to assist. It would also save us money, we would not need to rent moving trucks or have so many storage units.
